In the analog days, coaxial was the name of the game. And while coax is, at least to some extent, still relevant, it’s becoming less and less of a player in the transmission game. These days it’s all about fiber, UTP (Cat5, Cat6, even Cat 7) and more.

As the world moves from fully analog to fully digital, the market is expanding both thru new deployments and retrofits. This creates opportunities at each tier and in almost every niche, as a wide range of customers have different needs, and chose to satisfy those needs in a variety of ways.

For instance the larger the facility being secured; the more valuable an immediate transition to IP cameras. It is not so much how many facilities but the size of each specific facility. Because of the intrinsic limitations of coaxial cable, when facilities become too large, the costs of system installation increase dramatically. Think of office towers, corporate campuses, military bases. Low cost coaxial cable runs could not solve the problem. Proprietary networks were needed.

If you are upgrading an analog system to IP, existing coax and twisted pair can be used to carry the video using distance-extending transmission devices, which will lower installation costs considerably. In new installation, fiber optic transmission is usually more cost effective, and it provides greater bandwidth and distance capabilities than traditional copper, which is especially helpful with a large number of high-bandwidth (i.e. HD or megapixel) cameras.

I.P Cameras (Megapixel specifically) are able to bring a much higher resolution. Firstly, a MP Camera is already a digital so there is neither conversion nor compression. Secondly, MP Cameras run their signal through Latest H.264 compression, CAT 5 or 6 which allows for a much higher transfer of data.

1.3 MP is generally the smallest resolution of IP Megapixel camera, but is still quite a bit larger resolution than any Analog Camera. Even though this is a huge jump from analog, if this is not enough you can jump to 2.0 Megapixel and get a 1600X1200 resolution. Still want bigger? Go with 3.0 Megapixel and get a 2048×1536 resolution for huge image.
