Proxim’s high-bandwidth and high-availability solutions support a range of ITS applications, including traffic signals and digital signs
Proxim’s Tsunami® QB-8150 high performance wireless backhaul products were deployed to provide high definition video to the French town
Proxim Wireless Corporation, a leading provider of complete outdoor wireless backhaul systems, recently announced that the Community of Villefontaine, situated in the Rhone-Alps Region of France, has selected Proxim’s wireless backhaul solutions for its security and surveillance systems. To enable wireless high definition video surveillance, Proxim’s Tsunami® QB-8150 high performance wireless backhaul products were deployed.
Villefontaine is a relatively young town forming part of the suburbs of the City of Lyon in France. The local government facilities are dispersed in order to serve its residents, making it a difficult task for the local police to cover such a large area. This led to the requirement for a video surveillance system to help the local law enforcement services. The surveillance network deployment has proved to be a valuable day-to-day work tool which has helped to protect and maintain a safer environment for the local community.

Libertylan, the Proxim Wireless certified partner in this region, was selected as the integrator for the project which required a detailed wireless site survey prior to deployment. Costly leased lines were replaced by secure wireless links. This high capacity radio network was able to provide not only secure wireless transmission of video images but also other services such as data transfer and VoIP services.

“The Proxim Wireless system we have in place has performed flawlessly and has ensured the security of our critical applications,” said Thierry Gouin, IT Director for the community council of Villefontaine. “As a result of various pre-planning phases carried out by myself and Jerome Dumas as well as Libertylan we concluded that Proxim’s wireless backhaul products provided the performance and security we required. We were able to cancel some leased fiber lines which resulted in substantial cost savings.”

Christian Hascoet, Technical director of Libertylan added, “Proxim’s wireless solution was not only far less expensive but also easier and quicker to install than alternative solutions we considered. We have had a great deal of experience with Proxim so when it came time to deploy this network, Proxim’s Tsunami QB-8150 backhaul radios were an easy choice. The Tsunami QB-8150 radios provides high-performance, secure wireless links using Proxim’s Wireless Outdoor Router Protocol (WORP), which is 2 designed to optimize the performance of outdoor wireless Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multipoint links.”

“Not only have wireless solutions proven time and time again to be more cost-effective than fiber for video surveillance, but with deployments such as these around the globe, Proxim has shown that wireless is still an ideal total or partial solution for urban video surveillance deployments,” said Simon Snowdon, Sales Director for Western Europe at Proxim Wireless.
