Kochi will soon have a fool-proof security system
under ‘police-public partnership’ with active involvement of the business
community.
This initiative, on the lines of the ones existing in
metro cities, is in the backdrop of Kochi’s emergence as a major investment
destination making it vulnerable to security risks such as possible terrorist
attacks.
K. Padmakumar, Inspector General of Police, Kochi
Range, says that the idea is to involve business establishments as well as
social and religious organizations to assist the police in implementing an
integrated digital security system as practised in the West.
The authorities expect that this will go a long way in
improving the security for commercial establishments and public places.
“We need to change our systems according to the
changes that take place from time to time. Integrated digital security systems
are the need of the hour,” he told Business Line during an informal
chat.
According to Padmakumar, closed circuit television
cameras can be a very helpful devise as a single camera can perform the
surveillance equivalent to that of 15 policemen.
The police had sought the assistance of trade bodies
in installing cameras near their outlets locations since it involves huge
expenses, he said.
Already 90 cameras, which were installed to detect
traffic violations, are now being used to maintain law and order by extending
its link to the Police Control Room. With the geographical expansion of the
city because of development projects, he said, there is a need to install more
digital surveillance systems.
Currently, over 100 commercial establishments are
sharing their CCTV link with the police, Padmakumar said, adding that heavy
footfalls in shopping malls and commercial centres raise their own security
risks.
“We also have a digital library of wanted criminals,
which can be accessed to identify suspicious characters,” he added.
This PPP model is part of ‘Safe Kochi – Secure Kochi’
campaign of the city police, which is receiving overwhelming response. He
claimed that this is a unique model adopted by the police for the first time in
the country.
Besides, the police is also providing training to a
cross section of the society, comprising labourers, headload workers,
shopkeepers and members of resident associations to deal with natural disasters
before the arrival of experts on the scene, Padmakumar said.
Asked on cyber crime rates, he said it is on the rise
with more number of cases filed for email id hacking, electronic and social
media abuse, credit card fraud etc.
On fraudulent builders, he said the city police have
requested CREDAI to issue guidelines for the public on how to make safe investments
in residential projects. Several cases of cheating are reported from the city
on residential projects because of lack of awareness of the public about the
project and the companies.
